On 14 September Hindi Diwas or Hindi Day is observed every year to commemorate the day the Constituent Assembly of India recognized and adopted Hindi as the official Indian language. Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script and is the fourth most spoken language in the world after English, Spanish, and Mandarin.

As we all know that India is a land of a unique culture with vibrant colors, rich traditions, beautiful landscapes, and a variety of languages. Each state has its own regional language, with even more different languages in the remote and tribal areas. A language is a form of communication that is adopted by a particular community or a region.

History of Hindi Diwas:

  • Later, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru announced this day to be celebrated as Hindi Diwas in the country.
  • There are 22 Scheduled languages of India, of which, two are officially used at the Union government of India level: Hindi and English.
  • Hindi was adopted as one of the two official languages of the Republic of India by the Constituent Assembly on 14 September 1949. The decision was ratified by the Constitution of India that came into effect on the 26th of January 1950, and under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi is recognized as an official language.
  • The language was adopted under Article 343of the Indian Constitution. The first Hindi day was celebrated on 14th September 1953.
  • On 10th January World Hindi Day is observed every year.

Hindi Diwas or Hindi Day 2021 Important Fact

  • Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world.
  • Hindi is spoken by over 250 million people, which includes about 43.6 percent of the Indian population, as per the 2011 census.
  • The most interesting fact about Hindi is that “Hindi” is basically a Persian language word and the first Hindi poem was written by the eminent poet “Amir Khusro”.
  • The first literature on the history of the Hindi language was composed by a French writer “Grasim the Taisi”.
  • In 1977, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first external affairs minister addressed the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in Hindi.
  • The word “Namaste” is the most commonly used word in the Hindi language.
  • Hindi is one of the 7 languages in India that is used to create a web address (URL).
  • Efforts were made by several writers, poets, and activists for the adoption of Hindi as the official language. Some of them are Beohar Rajendra Simha, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Kaka Kalelkar, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, and Seth Govind Das. Moreover, Hindi was adopted as the official language of the Union on Beohar Rajendra Simha’s birthday, i.e.14 September.
  • Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar awards are also given to Ministries, Departments, PSUs, Nationalised Banks, and citizens on Hindi Diwas for their contribution to, and promotion of Hindi.
  • Apart from India, the Hindi language is also spoken in several other countries, like Nepal, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Fiji, and Mauritius.
